These are just a few questions we are asked when it comes to foyer lighting. This article is a follow-up to our Foyer Chandelier Ideas & More blog.
Can I Use a Dining Room Chandelier in the Entry?
Regardless of the size a chandelier by its very nature a chandelier is a hanging light fixture. That being said a foyer chandelier may also be a large flush mounted foyer ceiling light. Generally speaking a foyer chandelier is larger and grander than a dining room fixture. The foyer light sets the tone of the house.
The rule of thumb when choosing a large light fixture or any light for that matter is outlined in our blog How to Size a Chandelier. The formula is the same regardless of the space. To refresh you add together the room width and length and convert to inches. For example a foyer that is 9’ x 10’ would use a fixture that is generally 19” wide. The room height plays into the equation as well..
Foyer Lighting for High Ceilings
For example a space with 10’ ceilings the crystal foyer chandelier should hang about 7.5’ off the floor. A lower ceiling with a height less than 10’ for instance would install a smaller chandelier about 27” tall.
Many interior designers have a formula whereby the hanging chandelier would have a height of 2”- 3” for each foot of ceiling height. An example is with a 10-foot high entryway ceiling the overall chandelier length would be 20” to 30” inches in height.
When it comes to large, two story foyers there are a few things to keep in mine. First of all the chandelier should hang at least 5 feet down from the ceiling. If there is a window, the light fixture should be centered in the middle of any large picture window. Furthermore, the dramatic crystal foyer chandelier is a focal point and should be visible from the street.

Can I Use a Foyer Chandelier in my Great Room?
The answer is yes. A great room is ideal for a high ceiling chandelier. The ceiling design such as vaulted, sloped flat or cathedral determines the type of light fixture. For instance a flat ceiling is perfect for installing a long flush mounted ceiling light as well as a chain or rod hung chandelier. If the room is very large hanging multiple ceiling lights is a great option. Keep in mind that visually, shaded chandeliers help to fill up a space and add drama and texture.
For slope or vaulted ceilings, a chain hung chandelier is the answer. The chain allows the fixture to go with the slope.
